5 Top Tips for a Healthy Heart 13th February 2020
As Valentine’s Day approaches, there’s no better time to start thinking about your heart.
Here are our 5 top tips on keeping your heart healthy and ticking over:
1. Stay active
Take up something you enjoy, whether this be walking, yoga, pilates or a workout at the gym. Doing this at least once or twice a week makes a huge difference and is one step closer to keeping your heart in good condition.
2. Be smoke free
Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. Stopping smoking helps improve circulation, making physical activity, including walking and running, easier. Your immune system improves, making it easier to fight off colds and flu.
3. Maintain a balanced diet
Too much sugar, salt and saturated fat in your diet increases your risk of diabetes and heart disease. Eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day ensures you’re getting a good source of fibre, vitamins and minerals. Drink alcohol in moderation.
4. Keep well hydrated
Keeping hydrated throughout the day is essential for heart functions. Drinking 2 litres of water a day can help the heart and muscles work more efficiently.
5. Reduce stress
Take at least 10 minutes a day for yourself. Soaking in a hot bath, reading a book and meditation are great ways to relax your body and mind. Stress can often be caused by a build-up of tension in muscles that can restrict movement and cause pain. Massage is an excellent way of relieving muscle tension, improving circulation and promoting physical and mental relaxation and wellbeing. Massage helps to reduce cortisol (the body’s main stress hormone) and stimulates the production of positive hormones known as endorphins.
