Cold Water Therapy 18th August 2022
Cold showers, wild swimming, sea swimming and ice baths are gaining traction and popularity. We have both Wim Hof and Instagram to thank for that, but whether or not you have been influenced to try it yet, there are so many benefits to getting into cold water.
If you fancy giving it a go, read our blog below and just remember to exercise caution around cold water, and to do your own research beforehand in order to stay safe while you’re out there - or in it!
What is cold water therapy?
Cold water therapy is anything that involves cold water! It could be a cold shower or it could be an ice bath - depending on how brave you are and what sort of therapy you’re looking for. Water temperatures tend to be below 15°C, though the more extremes are no more than 5°C; brrr!
What are the benefits?
While it may not sound too appealing to begin with, cold water therapy actually has plenty of benefits that may make you consider giving it a whirl. It has been known to improve mental and physical well being, lower stress and anxiety, as well as increasing blood flow and circulation around the body. Some even believe it can boost the immune system helping lower the risk of infection.
Things to note
It is worth considering that cold water therapy is not for everyone, and that if you’re engaging with it, you should do so with caution. Cold water creates a stress response in the body - whilst it’s believed to have many positive effects, it can have dangerous effects like cold water shock, heart rhythm disorders or even hypothermia - so it is recommended that you do your own research and take things slowly and step by step.
Cold water and the body
The body is a curious place, and there are so many moving parts and intricacies. However, it is understood that cold water therapy can have a positive effect on movement and mobility, and it can also help minimise pain in some cases too. Just as you might after exercise, our team often recommend using ice after adjustments or massage - it helps to reduce muscle pain and stiffness by reducing swelling and inflammation.
Cold water and the mind
Ever taken a cold shower and wondered why you feel invigorated after? It is the magic of cold water. It can help you feel clearer, calmer, sharper and more focussed!
Do you need to be a professional?
You don’t need to be a professional or to be led by a professional to try cold water therapy, but it is advised that you exercise your own discretion. Don’t put yourself in danger and consider whether or not you’re heading too far out of your comfort zone before you commit to any activities. You could start by trying a small colder shower than normal to get used to the temperature, or even head into the sea for a shallow swim if you’re on holiday. Be careful of tides and other dangers if you’re planning this, and make sure you do your research beforehand. Above all - stay safe!
