Pilates
Pilates is something that we often recommend to our clients and patients, particularly if they are struggling with their lower back, or their back in general. We have Pilates classes here at the ecentre, and we are big advocates for using this gentle but powerful way of moving to engage through the core.
What is Pilates?
It was founded by Joseph Pilates and it is a physical system designed to strengthen the body and to increase flexibility. There are a variety of movements that are performed with a big focus on core strength and rehabilitating the body.
What are the benefits?
There are so many benefits to practicing pilates! It is great for toning and conditioning the body, but it is also amazing for helping with spine health and core strength. Everything in the body is connected, and so having a strong and engaged core is often a big help in getting the body moving again.
Is it the same as yoga?
It isn’t! If you practice both Pilates and Yoga, you will notice some overlap and some similarities, but ultimately, they are different practices and each hold their own benefits. If you’re looking for flexibility, yoga is the one for you, and if you’re looking for strength, book yourself in for some Pilates. Of course, when practiced together, they’re rather like a super team!
Is Pilates right for me?
It all depends on what your body needs and also what is going on for you. If you’re unsure, speak to one of the practitioners at the centre, and maybe give a Pilates class a go so that you can see how you get on. Remember to always listen to your body and take each movement as it comes.
How can Pilates help your body and back?
Pilates is strongly based on core strength, and when we strengthen the core, that adds more protection for the back. Not only does Pilates help you engage those bits of your core and the muscles that you might not even know are there, but it also helps a great deal with your posture, and helps you rectify those bad habits that modern-day life can bring!
At home versus going to a class
There are so many amazing online videos and workouts out there, but we think nothing beats an in person class. Ultimately, it is about what you’re comfortable with and where you feel like you can get the most out of the session. Either way, remember to practice with care and caution.
But, that’s enough from us! How about we hear from the lovely Becky, who teaches the classes here at the centre?
"My name is Becky and I have been practicing Pilates myself for around twenty years. I know from my own personal experience just how transformative Pilates can be for both the body and mind.
I was awarded my fitness instructor and Pilates instructor qualifications in 2015 and I’ve enjoyed teaching Pilates to all ages and abilities ever since."
Pilates is a series of flowing, bodyweight exercises that develop core strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. It is suitable for everyone and can be adapted to suit all levels, including complete beginners.
There are six principles that underpin the traditional Pilates method. These are;
Breathing Synchronising your breathing with your movements, and using deep, full breaths.
Centering Recruiting your centre, i.e. your core, when performing the exercises. (The core is the area from your upper back down to your hips.)
Concentration Focusing on the specifics of the exercises and giving the movements your full attention.
Control Maintaining complete mental control over your body and the movements you’re performing.
Flow Performing the movements smoothly and with fluidity.
Precision Ensuring correct placement and alignment of the body during the exercises."
If you're interested in trying a class, why not book one of the sessions at the centre? We have classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Satudays - give us a call on 01782 660744 for more information!
